I echo Clare’s thanks, much appreciated Ryan. Loved the practical tips and I agree, acceptance and curiosity are key.

Clare, just turned on greyscale, thank you for that suggestion!

About 4 years ago, I read Digital Minimalism and it really helped to change the cues that were stirring up compulsive use of my phone. Turning off notifications for text messages was really big, batching my use of my phone, and limiting time on apps (IG, texting). I stopped being grateful for this one repository of productivity tools and began seeing the phone as a planned effort to capture my attention. My attention is worth money to app developers, but it’s the centre of my Life! I was simply no longer interested in ‘being interested’ in the stuff on my phone. I wanted to be in my life more fully. I just turned on greyscale on my phone, and poof! it became an info centre, instead of eye candy. You captured many angles, and made great suggestions. I’ve never heard of Stoicism (will check that out). Thank you for raising this topic.

My overuse is not of a smart phone, but of other screens such as a computer and iPad. I struggle to stay focused on important tasks (including work) instead of checking Facebook or playing word games on my iPad. I can’t stop using my computer, obviously, and I don’t want to stop playing games. Still struggling.
