Thanks, Cheryl. Good tips. I also gained a new awareness of my habits in the course.

I’ve helped myself keep a habit of working out by renting a small locker to keep my workout gear in, at the gym (so I have no excuses about not having it with me), and I go straight to the gym on the way home from work. I found if I went home first, that I never managed to change and go to the gym. This new routine really helped me create a habit of going to the gym.

It helps with self-awareness of cues, routine, reward.

What helps me with my goals is to be intentional such as my workout gear is next to my bed so I put it on first thing in the morning to workout and I tell others my goals who hold me accountable and support me.

Also, only have 2 or 3. Don’t overwhelm yourself which will certainly cause failure.

I’ve sometimes been successful for a while in building a good habit using some of these tricks, but my downfall is usually when something beyond my control “breaks” the habit and then I can’t seem to get back into it.

For example, I had been doing a good job of doing some light cardio exercise (“Walk Away the Pounds” video) five mornings a week for about a year, but then I got a very bad, long bout of sciatica, which forced me to stop exercising (as the pain would get MUCH worse when I did). The sciatica finally subsided several weeks ago, but I can’t seem to restart the exercise routine….I tell myself that I’ll start on x day, but then that day comes and I’m busy or extra tired or it’s a “special” day (no exercising on my birthday!) or whatever. It just feels so nice to NOT have to spend my time on that (and to have the time to get more work done or just be lazy).

So, are there any extra-special tips on how to get back into a good habit that I’ve broken? Or is it really just a matter of doing the same things that got me into the good habit to begin with?

I am going to try this one out and see if I can change a habit by locating the cues and rewards. As a professional coach, my work makes connections to thoughts and feelings.

I read Og Mandinos book the worlds greatest salesman scroll 1 literally over 300 times and though I came to understand that Habit is powerful I have never been really great at the will power thing. Habits last for days or hours not years. My wife makes fun of my many goal failures. Have started exercising and stopped so many times about to mount a traffic light over the stationary bike. Now I am going to look for the cue that will help me get my feet on the floor (not the drill sergeant of years ago but maybe his voice on a recording would work) and build in a reward. I am more than double the body fat I was when the drill sergeant would wake me up and struggling to create a habit of exercise. Will power always seems to fail me when I am working to create a positive habit. Must build cues and rewards that work for me into the future.
