I love your stories. This one made me recall a time many years ago when i stole poppy’s from my aunt who lived across a 1 acre field from us. When i presented them to my mother she inquired where i got them knowing full well the answer. I replied that Aunt Lucille gave them to me. I will always suspect that they had already talked as i was walking home. So i added a lie to my theft. Mother used this as a teaching opportunity. I had to go back to Aunt Lucille and ask her forgiveness. Valuable lessons learned and remembered thanks to a very loving mother.

Crucial Conversations is a staple on my bookshelf. I’ve recommended it to many people. Thank you for writing it. Your articles are an inspiration. I’m glad you reposted this May Day memory. It mirrors my experiences. I too learned the lesson of not taking from others in order to give…yes I too was ratted on for pilfering a neighbor’s blooms for my beloved mother’s basket. Like you, I learned to be creative and found wild flowers to give not only to mother, but with her encouragement to neighbors as well. It was fun to secure the paper handle of the full basket on the front door knob, ring the bell and run like …crazy. I learned not to steal, to give to others to be creative and that giving anonymously to others brings great joy. Thanks for sharing your experiences and teaching such important skills.

Just delightful and heart warming! Told with the simplicity and innocence of a young boy and his determination. Absolutely loved it, and, I could see glimpses of my son when he was a first grader!
