When someone is saying “go back to where you came from” how does the surprise and disappointment idea work. It feels a little dangerous to me.

I have been using the strategy of talking to the person who is being attacked . Sitting next to her, asking if she is ok and ignoring the bully. But have often wished I could address the issue directly. Can you tell us a story about how it did go well that’s more about dealing with strangers?

It’s difficult to come up with exactly the right response that will “turn the crowd” in the moment. But fortunately, in most work and personal situations, you have more than the moment, in which to build relationships. And the teams we work in are not just a bunch of students who happen to be in the hallway at the given time. So one can build from a private conversation to a team agreement as to how we want to do things. It may not be instant, but it can be worthwhile.
