Could you give gold, silver and bronze awards to teams or people? Rewarding only one can alienate the other 99.

I will have to kindly disagree. The story itself was not written today. Kerry was relating something from his past that actually happened to illustrate a point–those were his son’s actual words– we should not edit words from the past to be “socially acceptable” today. Rewriting history to be politically correct is wrong because we DO learn and grow; we are becoming better people and we can see it by the words we use. Ignoring the way things were–sugarcoating or eliminating words from direct quotes–to make the message taste better today is not okay. Kerry’s message was clear. He used a family story to make a point. Could he have used a different story? Possibly. I don’t know. That one came to mind as he was writing the post, and I see no reason why he should have censored it as it illustrated his point perfectly.

Yes, because as we grow we learn. People who know better should do better. The story is written today and presented to be used as a lesson for today, It was not written many years ago as an “old timey” tale.

The word “sissy” is a direct quote from his youngest son spoken many years ago. Should we expect Kerry to edit history because we use kinder, more inclusive words today?

How could we do something similar? We’re not allowed to give out bonuses (gift of public funds) and profit is not our bottom line. I’m curious how we might modify this practice in the public sector.

I’m surprised to see the term used in a casual way in your story, and ask that you consider the meaning of the word. Its use here may not reflect an understanding of the diverse and inclusive audience for which I believe your trainings are meant to be marketed.
Thank you.

Vacations would have been far better and the souvenirs that eventually found their way into the trash would have been minimal.

I had the same experience with my sons related to buying school clothes. The first year that they were old enough to care about fashion, I inadvertently took on the role of the budget manager/skin flint. They wanted designer brands and the expensive cool clothes, and I wanted to stretch the money as far as it practically could go! We ended arguing and what should have been a fun day (shopping!) was adversarial and unpleasant for all. The next year I gave them a budget at the mall – I handed them their allocation in cash and said I’d meet them for lunch. This was all the money they were going to get and it needed to provide everything to start school. To my surprise, they used their resources excellently, hunted down the sales, made their choices, and … no arguments!
