It is a good story. I am so glad that you mentioned all the details that make stories fun. I am certain that you gave as much as you received in the influence of that friendship. You gained insight into building your dreams, hopes and aspirations for your future and I believe that you in return helped tone down your friends’ tendencies to be rude and disrespectful to authorities. I also appreciate your memories of the young lady that so gracefully welcomed her classmates into her home for lemonade. Most gifts that we give and receive have so little to do with our “success” in this life and more to the giving of a little of ourselves. Merry Christmas to you!

Not sure. But we know what Kerry went on to do.

Growing up in my family, it was unspoken and expected that you would do well in school, be disciplined, apply yourself, work part time, and grow up to be a helpful, productive person. One wrong action and you would get “the look” from mom or dad, and possibly punishment, eg, grounding. We didn’t have much but that didn’t matter; in the college years of the 60s-70s we had to take out college loans. Expectations were high and delivered.

You’ve now motivated me to list all the people in my life and see what gifts they have given me. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

It amazes me still how much one person can positively influence lives without even knowing it. And to Sam Baker, wherever you are, thank you for dreaming big and making it happen for you and your family. I am sure it took grit and perseverance which some call luck. Luck was described to me years ago as Labor Under Correct Knowledge.

Woozy? A little sick? We should be inspired by what we can do for others, not what we can do for ourselves and our immediate family. Americans living in lavish decadence (and selfish materialism) is precisely the problem with our society today. Not having to live paycheck to paycheck (which I have done for much of my life) has very little to do with happiness or meaning.
