The memories can be old or in the making! (Turn off the football games too!)

It’s can be found under the title: “Don’t go near the churning water.”

Yes, that’s a terrific idea. We do it in training, why not the same for the holidays?

Kerry your insight is genius. I know a lot families will be using their thumbs instead of their mouths on this special day. This year I am starting a new tradition! I am going to have everyone not only take off their shoes at the door, they must abide by my newly instituted Smartphone drop-off in a nicely decorated basket in my foyer. Now I’m off to the yard to pick up some beautiful fall leaves for my basket. Have a fabulous holiday.

Thanksgiving was not a huge family gathering for my family. My mother’s excuse was because she had grown up as a preacher’s daughter in the Depression and they had often been paid in turkeys. As a result, she didn’t like any occasion that revolved around a turkey. Both parents had left families in other parts of the country hundreds of miles away so we didn’t have big family to gather with. Thanksgiving was often just another meal with the same people.

It isn’t my favorite holiday as a result. However, I do love it and I’ve been thinking about what it is that I love.

I relish ANY opportunity to eat and drink with friends. We host a LOT of gatherings that revolve around food and drink but rarely have a chance to join the conversation until after people have been well served. For me, the buzz I get is from creating a spirit of generosity and abundance among the people who are gathered.

Thanksgiving is one that others’ host and we get to attend. I get to think about what will add to generosity and abundance, while dodging the lion’s share of service. As I say that, maybe Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, along with all of the other occasions where we gather to eat and drink together. Really, for me, it’s about community more than anything else.

Years ago my oldest daughter wanted to leave the table right after speed eating her food. When she asked to be excused I was disappointed and gave her permission on one condition, “no screens”. What does that mean? she replied. It means no TV, videos, iPad, smart phone…nothing with a screen. A few minutes later she returned to the table with a book. It happened to be a book on Presidential Trivia, and dinner quickly turned into game night. We answered questions and had “sparkling” conversation for the next few hours. After desert and cleaning up, the kids were ready for bed. Now after each family meal someone always says “it’s time to sparkle”.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving & your Family.

It’s all about food and fellowship. I have such fond memories growing up at these family meals. And learned so many life lessons, manners and wonderful family history.
Thank you for the reminder to keep the traditions alive!
