Involuntary demotions happen frequently through layoff, poor performance, accommodation, or as in this case, end of long-term temps. Because talking about the fact it is a demotion feels so awkward, folks often try to act as if it was just a new job. I think another bit of advice might be to acknowledgement it is normal and okay for the demoted individual to experience grief at the change in circumstance and to talk about the resources available to assist with managing the grief.
