Still developing their morals, they may be the most subject to moral slumber. In high crime neighborhoods, the common definition of success may be twisted or suppressed.

My wife is a tenured teacher. There is no complacency in her teaching. Her grade level is the only one in her school to achieve any passing scores (75% students passing or more) the last two years on state exams. Yet she is deeply concerned whether she and her coworkers will achieve similar results this year or any year. There is simply a great variance among incoming classes to swing the balance from one side to another. And this is not unique to any social strata. But a high performing school district has more leeway for slippage without falling short.

I know many excellent school districts in Ohio, all of which utilize tenure. Tenure is not automatically granted in the first place. It encourages dialog among teachers and the community. The un-tenured might be browbeaten into submission or fired by a principal (and lest we forget, a principal teacher was simply first among equals), a superintendant, or a board. No one has demonstrated to me that tenured teachers as a whole provide inferior results.

It was based on genuine concern yet did not allow emotions to overtake the process. I am in the education field and agree that there is often an appearance of lack of motivation. One thing to consider – in my opinion, the veracity of tenure can create a culture that breeds complacency. In the Influencer book, there is a section on performance and what happens when employees can do almost anything and not get fired. He stated that this lowers the threshold for acceptable performance and essentially can cripple the incentive for continous improvement. This is because there is no obvious reason for extending effort. I welcome your reaction.

Two points I would like to have seen in this article are to start with heart and with mutual purpose. There are time when two groups are saying the same thing thing, but not realizing it because they only see their own perspective. Thank you for your positive support of both parents and educators.
Sincerely,
Jody Tobler
