I’ve enjoyed reading Irvine’s work myself. His lectures on the Waking Up app are also good. Thanks, John.

This is definitely something to consider when dealing with patients who blame all their medical problems on someone else. For example a patient of mine is in end stage renal disease, and heart failure. She is also a hoarder. She blames her medical and situational troubles on everyone else. She does not take ownership of her situation and what got her there. It is always about someone else. The point in the article that struck me was the approach taken by the rehab director with potential candidates. The rehab counselor would not accept self blame as a reason for the candidates problems. Thank you for sharing this article

The unexpected twist at the end left me wondering then what did he do? The airline rerouting comment reminded me of the opening of William Irvine’s book The Stoic Challenge: A Philosopher’s Guide to Becoming Tougher, Calmer, and More Resilient. It’s all about cognitive reframing of one’s mindset; pausing to consider how we are framing something often helps us to reach a better resolution for everyone.

It’s a joke we used to tell when i was much younger. I grew up in a family that was full of anger. I also grew up at a time when bullying was a norm. So, my father taught me, a girl, to fight, not flight. Just yesterday i noticed that often at night or early in the morning my imagination goes wild and i imagine all of these what-if scenarios that involve someone attacking me. I can feel my adrenaline flaring up. Now i understand what i’ve been doing better and how bad it is for my health. Thank you for the explanation. I’ve recently taken up meditation and am now countering the urge to tell these silly scare stories with mindfulness. It would have been nice to learn this lesson in my 20s and not now in my 60s, but such is life. Better late than never. 🙂

I try to keep a positive attitude/open mind, especially when driving. I think it’s easier when I’m only seeing and not hearing as well. I don’t get mad at drivers who speed or change lanes closely. I’ve already developed stories that they may have to get to the hospital or to an airport or to a family member who’s dying. Unless someone actually hits my car, I wish them well and a safe journey to get to wherever they’re hurrying to. It helps to have positive stories to draw from in certain situations where we know we were angry, frustrated, or ready to blame someone before. It goes back to giving the other person the benefit of a doubt. I always try to do the best I can with the information I have at any given moment, and I try to remind myself that most other people do the same thing. Be forgiving. Be gentle and kind. And be positive. Their behavior is probably not about you.

I flew through Nashville and spent the night, then on to home the next day. Instead of complaining about the delay, I took the opportunity to explore the area around the airport. Saw the Grand Ol Opry and Mall and met the nicest hotel shuttle driver I have ever met. Certainly made lemonade out of lemons! It’s just not worth getting upset with things out of your control.
