I would like to offer another layer… Often times disagreements are result of folks not feeling honored for their opinions, thoughts, feelings, reactions. If they don’t feel motivated, don’t feel others are (genuinely) recognizing their conviction and opinions, and/or their logic and ideas, they attempt to get this recognition through negative attention. At this point, they would rather justify their negative behavior, rather than being effective. When this happens, they attack others that don’t believe the same, they preach, they are very opinionated and act self-righteous. They become very critical of others and attack from the “you” position. A formula for effective communication we use (out of the Process Communication Model from Taibi Kahler) is to, as much as possible, recognize these folks for their opinions, convictions, work and time structure. When they feel recognized, they feel “heard.” When they feel heard, they don’t attack – they can agree to disagree and go on.
