Back in September 2012, Kerry wrote an article about unplugging from the workplace, the difficulty and the benefits. I saw amazing parallels for a […]

Our pastor did a sermon series on Life in HD. He preached the first sermon I have heard on fasting. One example was a friend who fasted from cell phones every Monday and left a message to that effect on his voicemail.

It reminded me of a former boss who was always very supportive about work-life balance, but tended to do a lot of e-mailing on Saturday and especially on Sunday. I explained that although I knew she didn’t expect me to start working and responding on Sunday, it still felt like my workweek was starting on Sunday. From then on, she wouldn’t send e-mail over the weekend. Sometimes as bosses we don’t realize that our actions speak much louder than words in terms of how we set expectations with our employees.

In my new role however, things are better but there are still so many around me that see work as their whole life – one woman just got back from a European holiday and announced proudly that she spent the whole time thinking of work and was so happy to be back that she was not going to be planning another vacation for a very long time! What crazy world do we now live in? I want to send this article around to everyone in my office, but there would be many who just won’t/can’t embrace this message. I feel as a society we’re on a dangerous wheel to no where, and I for one, want to get off. No one goes to their death bed wishing they’d spent more time at the office!

He told us that he now suffers from numerous cancers and other health problems. He had some real good stories of getting seared by the heat and blown around by dust and air pressure. He said he was also told to run into the craters left from the explosions. This stuff really happened…
