The analogy of communicating through a straw is excellent! This shoule be required reading for anyone who ever uses the internet, in any form, to express themselves.

If you don’t have a Facebook account, you can also download our free e-book, “When Crucial Conversations Go Social” here: http://static.vitalsmartscdn.com/downloadredirects/fbebookredirect.html.

I wish everyone would follow such guidelines for communicating! I try and try to get people I know to stop having crucial conversations over “texts” AND other media, to not even start a crucial conversation that way, but they typically DON’T or won’t listen… then they wonder why everything gets so messed up. A couple thoughts, one, on the “Trust your gut” advice, it may be best for the person who is “reacting” to whatevers happening on the texts, basically the situation is heating up, to take a time out, take a long break BEFORE jumping on the phone to call… typically if they call right away, they may already be in a mode of emotional reaction or defensiveness. The other thought is, I have typically found that people who are already prone to getting into these messes, don’t have the tools to get out of them by talking face to face. Even though you arm them with such great advice. I’m not giving up on people, I don’t think, but I feel like its a, “you can’t fix stupid” situation. In other words, I feel like there’s a very small percentage of people who can actually take your advice and have the composure to apply it to their personal and emotional situations.
Cheers

It has saved me a lot of grief.

You hit the nail on the head! Nowhere are people more vulnerable than in the “straw view” of social media.
